Extreme Makeover: James Tower Edition
Jan. 30, 2007 -- The contractors didn’t arrive with paint rollers and a film crew, but they did create an astounding makeover that adds enough new layers to keep the web hosting servers running, even through a major disaster.
James Tower’s North Mankato, Minn., building underwent the rapid change in February. A new back-up diesel generator with twice the capabilities as the old one was installed with the help of 25 contractors and all of the data services employees.
First, a cement panel had to be removed. The old generator was moved out of the building, the new generator installed, and the wall replaced during a -10 degree cold snap.
It took six hours.
Six hours to increase our onsite fuel supply from 24 hours to three days. Six hours to rebuild the reinforced walls. Six hours to complete a system that adds more layers of protection for our web hosting clients.
No joyful crying or hugging, but a proud knowledge that our clients’ web sites will be working, even if the rest of the world shuts down.
